January 3 was the first practice of the new year. It was met with many members and a well filled dojo. It was also a day of celebration as the first belt promotions of the year! Promotions were congratulated with the tradition of throwing the person being promoted, although ranks only up to Shodan participate in this.
Sensei Ernest Miyamasu was promoted to Rokudan (6th degree black belt) and is now the highest ranking sensei in the dojo. He started judo at Kaimuki Judo Club and moved when Hodokan Judo Club was created. Upon re-naming of the club to Manoa Judo Club, he attained the role of head instructor.
Macy Higa was promoted to Shodan (1st degree black belt). Macy started judo in 2009 at the age of 8. She is a Junior National Champion and a High School State Champion.
Both promotions are very well deserved!
Congratulations!!
